From the Norm Flayderman Antique Firearms and edged weapons catalog no. 55 (1962?).
Without a doubt, the most unusual and amongst the most historic pieces we have
handled is this 16th century massive alarm gun allegedly used by the Swiss Guards
in the Vatican at Rome. Has a fine pedigree and recently released from one of the
finest arms collections in the world. Weighs 50 lbs. Measures 43 inches overall with
a huge 23 inch oct iron bbl having the complete muzzle of very heavy bronze
beautifully turned with a floral design in center. 3 massive brass bands handsomely
and fully engr fasten bbl to the stock. Stock itself a masterpiece of work being made
from one single piece of wood. The gun was probably weelock when originally made and
in the late 16th or early 17th Century was changed over to fl. On close inspection it
can be seen where the wood was filled in to take this smaller size lock. Does appear
definitely orig. to the piece and workmanship contemporary with age of piece. Mec
needs adj to cock and release only. Trigger is in a deep recess underneath the lock.
Great many handsomely fully engr brass inlays with very large inlay inscribed St.
Colonban on the left side. The others are stylized fish and serpents symbolizing
purity ect. St. Colonban symbolic of teaching and truth. For a long time there was
a question whether the Italian govt. would allow this historic piece to be removed
from Italy.
